My blogging experience

Hi! This is the last time I will write in this blog, for the English course is getting to an end. I had never had a blog before, so this was my first time blogging. I enjoyed doing it, more than having English classes in a classroom. It was really fun writing about some topics that I hadn’t even thought about. I really like writing, but I don’t make the time to do it. I prefer making other things, such as sleeping or studying to get things done as soon as possible.

While I was in the law school, I wrote my blogs every time we had to, that was more or less once a week. When the law school sat in, English classes were cancelled along with all the other subjects in that faculty. Then, there were no more blogs published until the law faculty returned to its normal state. Since I am the only one from that class that belongs to another faculty, and since I didn’t want to miss my winter vacations, I was transferred to an English class in my Faculty, including obstetrics students, phonoaudiology students and occupational therapy students. That is why I had to do all the missing blogs in about one week.

This is why I didn’t enjoy doing the 6 last blogs I published. I had to do them really fast and not having time to think about the topics (I thought about them at least one day before writing them when I had to write one blog a week). As I said before, I like writing, but it becomes boring when I’m forced to do it quickly.

I think blogging didn’t help me to improve my English, but it did help me practicing it. To keep a blog in the English class is important, because it makes you practice your writing abilities. It is also fun, when you have time to think about the topics and write about them.

Review of a talk

For this blog, we were told to watch and listen to a talk given by Ken Robinson about creativity and how schools kill it. I liked very much what Ken Robinson said, and I really enjoyed the talk.

I think it is important what Ken says about being wrong. He sais that being wrong is not a synonym to being creative, but if you’re always afraid of being wrong, you will never get to be creative. I think this is really true. If somebody wants to be creative, there’s a chance of being wrong, and that’s what makes children be more creative than adults, they’re not afraid of being wrong.

I think it is also relevant what he says about the hierarchy in schools. It is true that everywhere on earth mathematics and languages are given more importance than humanities (and science), and that arts and music are at the bottom. Actually, in the school were I went you were given the possibility to choose if you wanted to have arts or music, but not both (there was no space in your schedule, because you had to have all of the other subjects, although I was more interested in arts and music than in history).

I think it is really funny when Ken refers to the body as a way to transport the head. The worse thing is that what he says is true. Adults don’t teach children how to use their bodies, they teach them how to use their minds. It is important to have a balance between body and mind, and that is what we should be teaching to future generations.

When he closes the talk, he says that humanity has mined our minds for a particular commodity that will not serve us in the future. Maybe it won’t, but I think it will, because, although creativity is important, knowing about things that the educational system teaches us is also important.

My ideal job

My ideal job would be to work as a doctor with children. This specialty is called pediatric. I would like to be a pediatric because I love children, and I like very much interacting with them. I have heard that pediatrics tend to give more attention to what mother have to say about their children, but I would like to make a change in this. I would like to consider what the child has to say, and what his feelings are about his body. I would like to be a didactic doctor who can teach a child a little bit about what is happening to his body.
I think someone who wants to give treatment to children needs to be comprehensive and needs to have patience. This is why I think I would be good a good pediatric. I think I have what it takes to treat children in the medic area. However, this is a difficult job. Children may be really timid and not want to tell strangers about what is happening to them. This can make difficult the doctor’s work, because what is really essential for a doctor is to be able to communicate with his patients. This is because if you can’t communicate with the patient, you will never be able to realize what is happening to him.

My favorite subject this term

My favorite subject this semester is Physiology. This subject explains how the body works molecularly, and all the processes that occur inside us. It is a second-year subject here in Universidad de Chile, and has as a requirement, that everybody knows about the body’s anatomy.
There are many teachers on this subject. This is because the subject has many sub-subjects, as Neurology, Excitability, Endocrine system, Digestive system, Metabolism, Cardiology and Inmunology. Moreover, there are many teachers in every area, because our generation is divided in sections because we are many students.
I like this subject because it is very interesting. It is the base for every medicine student, for it teaches you how the body works. This is the main thing a student wants to learn about when he decides to enter to the medicine school. I have learnt very much this semester, especially about Neurology, Excitability, Endocrine System and Digestive system, which are the areas that I have been taught about this semester.

What I would like for me in the future

This time I will talk to you about what I would like to be doing from here to 5 years more. On 5 years, I hope I will be on 7th year of medicine, as a resident in a hospital. I will already be 25 years old, so I wish I could already be living alone.
It is my dream to marry around 5 years from here, so that I can start planning on having a family. I would like to be living with my fiancé or husband around that time, here in Chile and not in another country. Professionally, I hope I already know what I want to specialize in once I finish my career.
Over everything I have already said, I would like to be a happy person. I am willing to be proud of everything I will have done by that time. I would like my family to still have good health.

The best in my area

I think there is no “best doctor”. Every doctor is good in his area, since there are many areas in which you can specialize when you’re a doctor. In my opinion, the best famous character in medicine is Patch Adams.
Hunter “Patch” Adams is a doctor that appears in a movie based on real facts (role played by Robin Williams). I like him very much, and the role he plays in the movie. He is a doctor that makes children with illnesses happy. He goes around with his red clown nose, making every child in the hospital laugh. He thinks there are alternate methods to heal diseases.
I think Hunter Adams is an example to all doctors and medicine students. Some doctors are cold and serious people, and I think humor is something very important when you treat with patients. This is why I like him and what makes him the best.

A picture I like

Hi! Today I will talk to you about a picture I love. This is the photograph:

This is my cat. My cat's name is Maní. It is now two years and four months old. It lives with me in my flat, and is a very loving cat. It always gets on my lap when I am studying, because it wants me to rub its fur. Maní was a gift from my boyfriend, on my 18th birthday, so besides it is a great pet, it has a special meaning.

The picture is special because it is in Chapa Verde, near Rancagua, when we went on vacation this summer (on February). I went with my family to the mountains, and we took the cat on vacation too. We could realize Maní had a great time there. It could hunt many types of animals, including birds and mice. It brought them to us is if its preys were trophies.

The photograph was taken by me, when my cat was resting on that piece of wood. I like the picture particulary because it reminds me the great time I had on that vacation with my family and my cat. I hope I can have so much fun on another ocation.

My career

We’re back at last! As you already know, I am studying Medicine in the University of Chile. I am studying this career because it is what I have always wanted to do. I really want my career to reach its end so I can work as a Doctor. The contribution of doctors to society is working with people to heal them from their diseases. This is really important, because there are always ill people who need attention to get rid of their illnesses.
I think important tools a doctor needs to have are empathy, knowledge and courage. Empathy, because doctors need to be able to understand the feelings of the patients they see. Knowledge, because it is essential to know about the illnesses that may come to be able to heal them. Courage, because sometimes doctors have to make difficult decisions, and courage is needed to make them.
My favorite subject this year is physiology. This subject explains how does the body work, and it is the base to understanding pathologies. I hope there are other subjects along my career that motivate me as much as this one does.

My favourite career-related website

The website realted to my career i like the most is Medline Plus:
http://medlineplus.gov/spanish/

This website provides information about health, has a medic encyclopedia, has the most recent news in the medic area and offers interactive tutorials to learn about some topics. I found this site some years ago, when I still went to school. A friend of mine, who also studies medicine, had to do a proyect and found this website on the internet with a lot of information that was very useful. That's when she showed the site to me, and I use it whenever I can since then.

I visit the site not really often. I try reading the news and health topics when I have got time, but that's really difficult when you study medicine. I like very much this website because it provides a lot of relevant information and updated news on things related to health, which is very important to know for any Medicine student.

My favourite piece of technology is my laptop. I got it on February 2008, because I was going to enter University and my father had promised he would give me one so that I could use it when I got out of school. I use my laptop as a notebook al University, taking it to class and writing every note on it. This is why I use it everyday, even Saturdays and Sundays, when I must study or download any material from "U-Cursos" to do my homework.

I like my laptop because it is a multifunctional object. I can also play games on it, like Starcraft and Minesweeper; enter facebook and contact my friends; open my mail to see if anyone has the need to contact me; and also, write on this blog (which is what I am doing right now on my laptop). Life without this piece of technology would be inimaginable. I was born with it existing, so I can't imagine life without it. It is now so necesary to me, that I think life would be a lot tougher if it didn't exist. I think many peoplethink as me.

See you when I publish my next homework!

About myself

Hi! I'm Andrea Straub, but people usually call me Andy. This is my first english class here at the Law Faculty. I'm from Santiago, Chile; and I especifically live in Huechuraba. I am studying Medicine in Universidad de Chile, and I'm on my second year. I live with my father and with my stepmother in a cozy apartment. I'm a girl of regular height and regular weight, and I'm happy with it.
My hobbies are to go dancing with my friends and go shopping whenever I can. I love cats, and enjoy playing with my cat a lot, whos name is Maní. I really like to sleep well and the number of hours that I need, I go to bed every night before 9 p.m., if time allows me to do that (sometimes I have a lot to study and I can't go to bed early).
My goals in life are to finish my studies so I can have a family and take really good care of it. That's all I can tell about me now! Maybe if you continue to read my blog every week, you can get to know me better. Bye!
